Helping Seniors Stay Social

Life can become lonely as we grow older. It may be harder to get out and about due to the physical or cognitive challenges of health conditions. Friends and family members who have moved away or passed away are missed. Extended family members are often so busy with their own obligations, it can be hard to visit as often as they’d like. And the COVID-19 pandemic, which required isolation and social distancing, compounded the problem even further.

Maintaining social ties is crucial for our health and wellbeing, with tremendous benefits that include:

  • Improved memory and protection against neurodegenerative diseases
  • A decreased risk of type 2 diabetes
  • A lower rate of anxiety and depression
  • Higher overall satisfaction with life
  • A longer lifespan
  • And more

Psychologist Susan Pinker further explains, “Face-to-face contact releases a whole cascade of neurotransmitters and, like a vaccine, they protect you now, in the present, and well into the future, so simply shaking hands, giving somebody a high-five is enough to release oxytocin, which increases your level of trust, and it lowers your cortisol levels, so it lowers your stress.”

At Northwest Guided Home Care, our companionship care services ensure that the seniors you love have the opportunity to develop and strengthen social connections. Our companions are here to share in:

  • Conversations and reminiscing

    Hello and thank you,
My sister has just experienced the death of her husband of 55 years, four weeks ago, and she has just been moved out of her home of 50 years into a facility for people with Dementia in Renton, Wa. by her two children. Both her children work full time and have families. One lives in the East, the other is in Renton. I live in California and I still work full time.
I would like to find some one who would visit Pam, my sister, as a companion, to bond with her and provide a friendly face and conversation. Perhaps go for walks, maybe some personal care. I did this for Catholic services as a volunteer in Seattle when I lived there a few years ago. I did light housekeeping, personal care and provided conversation. Usually for a couple of hours twice a week. It was good and have people something to look forward to.
Do you have this service available? Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Robi Brooks
